Arguments by Alumni at the Supreme Court | Center for Ethics & Leadership Speakers

The Center for Ethics and Leadership invites students, faculty, staff, alumni, guests and friends to a discussion of important international human rights case argued before the Supreme Court by two St. Edward’s University alumni.

University Trustee, Steve Shadowen '80, BA, and alumnus Bob Hilliard '80, BA, English Literature, and General Studies, represented the family of a Mexican national killed by U.S. Border Patrol agents along the southern border, obtaining the first ever ruling that Mexican nationals killed by U.S. agents in Mexico can obtain judicial review of those killings in U.S. courts. They took that case all the way to the Supreme Court, which in the summer of 2017 vacated the judgment and remanded the case to a lower court. In this presentation, both lawyers will talk about the case, describe their experience arguing at the Supreme Court and the next steps they’ve planned in their pursuit of justice for the Hernandez family.
