Natalie Diaz was born and raised in the Fort Mojave Indian Village in Needle, Califronia, on the banks of the Colorado River. She is Mojave and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Tribe. She is the author of the poetry collection When My Brother Was an Aztec. Her awards include a Bread Loaf Fellowship, the Holmes National Poetry Prize, a Princeton Hodder Fellowship, a PEN/Civitells Foundation Residency, and a US Artists Ford Fellowship. She is also a Lannan Literary Fellow and Native Arts Council Foundation Artist Fellow. She teaches at Arizona State University.
