Nostra Aetate Lecture - The Catholic Encounter in “Indian Country”

Dr. Jennifer Graber is Associate Professor of Religious Studies & Affiliate Faculty with Native American & Indigenous Studies at the University of Texas in Austin.

Her talk will consider Catholic missions in what was referred to at the time as "Indian Territory" and their relationship to the broader American Catholic call for religious freedom. As Catholics sought to carve out a space for themselves in a religious landscape dominated by Protestants, Catholic schools on Native American reservations were central to larger disputes about the free exercise of religion.
